Preparing for Winter Operations

Slips, trips, and falls are the top type of employee injuries. These incidents occur at the station and on the scene throughout the year. But increase substantially through the winter months. Slips, trips, and falls are costly for fire departments as well, with the average lost workday claim reaching $60,000 in costs. Awareness, policy, equipment, and tactics combine to help reduce your exposure to injuries.

Safety First

Safety must be a top priority at your fire department. A major concern for any fire department is drug and alcohol use by the members. Workplace safety is severely affected when volunteers are responding or working after consuming alcohol, illicit drugs and illegally-obtained prescription medications.

  • Are volunteer firefighters regularly responding to scenes after drinking?
  • Have volunteers responded to the scene, clearly under the influence?
  • Is alcohol being used on fire department property?
  • Has drinking or impairment cause problems for your department?
  • Does management condone impaired volunteers because, “we need the help?”
  • Unfortunately, many fire departments across Missouri have not addressed alcohol use with regard to emergency responses or group events at the station.

Truck Checks: A New Perspective

Truck checks are a basic function of every fire department. They’re an appropriate task for all members, especially new volunteers. Safety, reliability and equipment familiarity are all improved when trucks are checked on a regular basis.

It’s a great feeling when engines start and run, and folks know where tools and equipment are located. This is especially important during times of stress, like during a working structure fire or auto entrapment.

Difficult situations are made worse when your members can’t find tools, or are unfamiliar with how to start engines on ventilation fans or extrication pumps. Unfortunately, members of your community will see this confusion, which isn’t a good look.
