The 2017 Poster Contest Winners attended the Missouri State Fair. They are being presented their award check along with Fire Prevention Committee Chairman RB Brown.
At the Awards Ceremony and Business Meeting held Saturday, August 19, at the Missouri State Fair Fire Department, it was decided that the Department Union will be making several donations to various causes. The Missouri State Fair Fire Department (MSFFD) Union collects fines during the fair from firefighters and EMS personnel to raise funds for these different donations. It is all done with good intentions. The fines are collected from personnel who have committed silly actions the previous day and gotten caught.
The first donation will be used for the 2017 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb in Jefferson City which will be hosted by the Missouri State Fire Marshall on September the 10th at the Jefferson Building. The MSFFD has elected to donate $350 to sponsor a floor during the stair climb. The fire department will also buy three bricks in memory of fallen Firefighter Jeffrey Sanders of Mayview, Captain John Kemper from St. Louis FD and Firefighter Jesse Ketchum of Memphis who lost their lives in the line of duty. The department voted to purchase a fourth brick for the 2017 MSFFD. These bricks will proudly be displayed at the Firefighter Memorial located in Kingdom City. Continue Reading →
At the meeting of all personnel on August 19, 2017 we gathered to honor the Clinton Missouri police officer who lost his life in the line of Duty, Officer Gary Michael. His Road Sergeant, Chad Nepple represented the Clinton Police Department for the presentation. We gave the family a firefighter flag that was signed by Law Enforcement, EMS, Fire, Conservation and State Officials at the 2017 Missouri State Fair to honor his ultimate sacrifice. He lost his life on August 6, 2017, during a traffic stop.
The Fire Fighters Association of Missouri and the Missouri State Fair Fire Department (MSFFD) hosted a no cost, two-day training in cooperation with the City of Sedalia Fire Department, Pettis County Fire Department, National Propane Education and Research Council, Missouri Propane Education and Research Council, University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute, and the State of Missouri Fire Marshall’s office for firefighters at the Missouri State Fairgrounds firehouse. EMS equipment and an ambulance were furnished by the Higginsville Fire Protection District, Higginsville EMS and Wellington Fire Protection District for rehab and on scene medical care.
The trainers instructed twelve hours of classroom training on how to handle propane emergencies to assist the firefighters on scene and eight hours of hands on firefighting skills dealing with propane fires and vehicles. The bobtail delivery vehicles were used for vehicle familiarization if an emergency occurred and were furnished by Heet Gas Company of Cole Camp and MFA Oil Company of Warrensburg. These companies also fueled the live fire training props with propane for the exercise.
Live fire props of a domestic propane tank and bobtail were used for the live fire training. Basic propane equipment and parts were used to assist in building firefighter knowledge and awareness when arriving on the scene. The Missouri State Fair started in typical August fashion with hot weather. We had a staff on hand of 75 volunteer’s average per day to manage and care for all the fair visitors. We had five ALS ambulances and four engines ready to respond during the 264 hours we were in service. The Missouri DMAT team again deployed to assist with patient care free of charge for the fair visitors. Their staff averaged eleven people per day and were available to provide care and treatment as needed. We provided service with a total of 756 personnel during the fair totaling 18,144 hours of service.
The concerts and events kept us busy with the heat for opening weekend. Calls are always interesting to make it through all the crowds safely to assist those in need. We had big turn outs at the firehouse for kids wanting to see the equipment and of course Patches and Pumper and the famous Sparky and Smokey the Bear. We have great participation from all the crews on standby staying at the firehouse to assist with public relations. Continue Reading →
