News From District 2 – July 2020

Well usually at this time I thank everyone that attended the memorial services in May. As you know that was postponed. Make sure you have marked your calendar for October 10-11. The Missouri State Fire Marshal 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is also that weekend. It will be held in Jefferson City on Saturday, October 10. Bring a team or donate to the stair climb on their website. Then make the drive north thirty minutes to the candlelight service that evening.

As you know the FFAM annual conference has been canceled for this year. However, the annual meeting will be held Sunday, August 9, 2020, at 9:00 a.m. at the State Fair Fire Department building on the grounds of the state fair in Sedalia. See information about it in this issue.

The Missouri Firefighter’s Educational and Historical Preservation Center is now up. Work remains on the outside and we are now raising money to finish the inside. Thanks to all the folks that purchased tickets for the beef and congratulations to the winners.
Not a lot going on in my area as many departments are just cranking up their meetings again due to COVID-19.

At the FFAM meeting on Sunday, June 7, the fire marshal announced that the Division of Fire Safety has implemented a program to recognize members of the Missouri fire service. It is called a “Salute to Service.” There were several categories. One was for senior fire officers and other members that were hired or promoted to fire chief in the state of Missouri. The second one was for the family of any current member or retiree death. I believe it was regardless of rank. And the third was for members of the fire service here in Missouri that have retired. You can get more information on the Division of Fire Safety website.

It looks like the state fair is a go. We are not sure we know what it will look like. If you are coming to the fair stop by the fire station and say hello.

The National Honor Guard Academy from Seminole, Florida, is coming to Missouri on October 23-24, in Lake Ozark, Missouri. They will be presenting a 2-day intensive program. Want to learn about honor guard procedures? Go to mopublicsafetyweekend.org for more information. At the end of the weekend, a banquet will be held. Juliann Ashcraft from Prescott, Arizona, will be the guest speaker. There will be a portion of the evening where they will honor those that have given the ultimate sacrifice and honor those that have passed away in 2019 and 2020. Till next time be safe.
