Fire Prevention Committee Update

Hello to all, I can officially say summer is here. Please take care of yourself when the temps and the humidity are high and drink lots of water. With the summer solstice behind us and the dog days of summer ahead, that means the Missouri State Fair is getting close, August 11-21.

All the poster contest winners are invited to attend the Missouri State Fair, August 12-14 and August 19-21, to have fun. If the fire districts or department have winners, please extend this invitation to the artist and contact the fire prevention chairperson by the end of July with arrangements. The winner will get into the fairgrounds, a pass to the midway and will receive the prize money. I hope to see all the winners at the Missouri State Fair.

The 2016 convention is in the history books. With that being said, I’m proud to announce the winners of the 2015 poster contest. The theme was Hear the Beep While We Sleep. Before I do I want to thank the ladies’ auxiliary for the time and effort of judging sixty-four posters which was down from last year, and to the districts and departments that entered the posters. This year’s winners will be asked to attend the Missouri State Fair as a guest of the State Fair Fire Department in August. At the fair they will receive their prize money, and as an extra thank you for a fine job, they will receive a pass for the midway and have a fun day at the Missouri State Fair. I’m asking the winning districts and departments to help make notifications to the winners to make arrangements to attend the state fair which is August 11-21 more information to be announced.

A big congratulation to:

Calling all districts and departments! This year’s artists are looking for each district to summit a poster. Make sure to read the rules and guidelines for the poster contest and use the back page information sheet. Let’s all get involved and make for a great showing in this year’s contest.

Fire Prevention Week

This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years,” represents the final year of our three-year effort to educate the public about basic but essential elements of smoke alarm safety.

Why focus on smoke alarms three years in a row? NFPA’s survey data shows that the public has many misconceptions about smoke alarms, which may put them at increased risk in the event of a home fire. For example, only a small percentage of people know how old their smoke alarms are or how often they need to be replaced.

As a result of those and related findings, we’re addressing smoke alarm replacement this year with a focus on these key messages:

Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years.

Make sure you know how old all the smoke alarms are in your home. To find out how old a smoke alarm is, look at the date of manufacture on the back, the alarm should be replaced 10 years from that date

Have a great safe summer and remember that fire prevention is a daily event, keep up the great job.
